How I Passed the GCP Professional Cloud Architect Exam (5× Certified Tips)

The Professional Cloud Architect is Google Cloud's most recognised certification. As someone who has passed 5 GCP exams, here's the study strategy that works — and the traps to avoid.

The PCA Is a Scenario Exam, Not a Fact Exam

Most candidates fail the Professional Cloud Architect because they memorise product features instead of learning to reason about trade-offs. Every question presents a business scenario and asks you to pick the best solution — not just a correct one. The exam rewards architects, not encyclopaedias.

What the Exam Actually Tests

  • Designing for scalability, reliability, and security: Know when to use GKE vs Cloud Run vs App Engine vs Compute Engine — and more importantly, why.
  • Network architecture: VPC design, Shared VPC, VPC peering, Cloud Interconnect vs VPN, load balancer types.
  • IAM and security: Least privilege, service accounts, organisation policies, VPC Service Controls.
  • Storage selection: Cloud SQL vs Spanner vs Firestore vs Bigtable vs BigQuery — know the decision matrix cold.
  • Cost optimisation: CUDs, preemptible VMs, tiered storage, lifecycle policies.

My Study Plan (6 Weeks)

  1. Weeks 1–2: Google Cloud Skills Boost learning path for PCA. Do every lab — don't skip them.
  2. Week 3: Read the official case studies (Dress4Win, Mountkirk, TerramEarth, Helicopter Racing League). These appear verbatim in the exam.
  3. Weeks 4–5: Practice exams — Whizlabs and the official Google sample questions. Review every wrong answer until you understand why the right answer is right.
  4. Week 6: Focus on weak areas, redo difficult labs, light review only.

The Single Most Useful Resource

The GCP decision trees in the official documentation: the storage options guide, the compute options guide, and the networking products overview. Print them out. Know them.

Exam Day Tips

  • Flag every uncertain question and come back — there are 50 questions in 2 hours, so you have time.
  • Eliminate clearly wrong answers first. Usually 2 of the 4 options are obviously unsuitable.
  • When in doubt, prefer managed services over self-managed. Google almost always wants you to use its managed offerings.
  • Prefer the answer with the least operational overhead unless the scenario specifically requires control.
